The tradition of the Palatine wine-growing region extends back to the days of the Romans. It has a unique shape (85 kilometers long and just a few kilometers wide) and extends in the East to the Haardt Mountains. It has a commanding share of the market; every third bottle of German wine purchased in Germany comes from the Palatinate. All this is possible as a result of the Palatinate’s exceptionally mild climate; in some years, the number of sunny hours exceeds 2000. Its size is also significant; the Palatinate with its almost 57,800 acres is Germany’s second largest wine-growing region, accounting for about one-quarter of all of Germany’s wine-growing acreage.

One More Superlative: The Palatinate is the largest growing area for Rieslings in the world

Aside from the large number of varietals produced here, the Palatinate has a distinct profile: it is Riesling country par excellence. The growing acreage dedicated to the “King of Wines” is constantly growing; with its 13,480 acres, the Palatinate has, since 2008 been the largest Riesling-growing region in the world. The quality is equally impressive: top-notch Rieslings from the middle Haardt region, the northernmost wine-growing region of the Palatinate, were numbered in the past as the most expensive and most honored wines in the world and were used, for example, in 1869 for the opening of the Suez Canal. Today, the successors to the wine growers of that era have adopted that tradition. They are still winning prizes at “mundus vini”, “Best of Riesling” and other recognized wine competitions.
