The Brass Ensemble “Dom zu Speyer”

The Brass Ensemble “Dom zu Speyer” has developed into an integral component of Speyer Cathedral Music, primarily dedicating itself to sacred music, and provides musical enjoyment at the highest artistic level. Under the aegis of Domkapellmeister Markus Melchiori, the artistic director of the ensemble, the group has managed to pool the collective talent of its 5-10 members, all renowned musicians from the region’s various orchestras, into a unified whole. Their sound is unmistakable, conjuring up the magnificence and dynamic power that only brass instruments can summon.

The repertoire of the Brass Ensemble “Dom zu Speyer” is comprised of both classical as well as modern arrangements and compositions, placing a particular emphasis however on the Renaissance and Baroque music of the greatest European cathedrals, from composers such as Bach, Gabrieli and Scheidt.

As one of the many excellent musical ensembles from the Speyer Cathedral, the brass ensemble participates in festive liturgy and concerts in the diocese and beyond, such as, for example, the widely respected “Speyer Cathedral International Music Festival”. At such events, the brass ensemble is often accompanied by organ and kettledrums, and, along with the cathedral choirs and the Speyer Cathedral Festival Orchestra, delight the audience with solo pieces, masses, and symphonic works.

The Brass Ensemble “Dom zu Speyer” has performed concerts abroad, playing to international audiences in Poland, Hungary, France, Austria, Serbia and Italy amongst others.

The virtuosity and sonic splendor of this ensemble is regularly recorded live for television and audio recordings.
