Sculptural Art

Almut Heer

There are different ways to approach sculptural work and the list of choices is nearly unlimited. It seems reasonable to work with the familiar material clay and to try out additional methods of handling this material. Those, who have never worked with clay before are taught some essential fundamentals. While in classical modelling the object is developed from the inside outwards, its quite the opposite with sculpting: the material is hammered off. In order to try out this method, there is an introduction in stone sculpture in the summer semester, but you can also work with clay alternatively. In addition to techniques and getting familiar with the material I would like to give each student the opportunity to experience life drawing and since the human face can hardly be exceeded in its sculptural complexity and because everybody has one we will repeatedly work with the human head and body and do some portrait work.
