Buíochas do Mhuintir Acla
Ar Ais Aris

This was the message we wore on our T-shirts when we met members of the Achill community on Sunday afternoon in the Cliff House Restaurant in Keel. This welcome reception was the first opportunity for us to express our thanks to the Achill community for inviting us once more.

The intention behind our journey is to learn something about our own cultures (as students and staff from Germany, Sweden, England, Denmark,
Lithuania and Spain are involved) and about the life and culture of Achill Island. This island will provide a wonderful stimulating environment for us to engage in a unique intercultural encounter. The first contacts have been established by email in advance – and project work will focus on bringing the community and our group in touch with each other.

This internet diary of the project will be used to ensure that even our friends who had to stay behind will actually be able to take part in our experiences… at least virtually.

Apart from this digital documentation, the workshop activities will include some research in the history of Achill, e.g. in the Deserted Village and its backgrounds and some creative work, e.g. in the Music Workshop and the Writing Workshop; all of these experiences, which will be facilitated by the participation of our Irish partners, will be documented using the new media. The workshop “Describing a European Landscape” will focus on the interaction between landscape and people from a European perspective – and the workshop “Europe goes to school” will enable us to get in touch with Irish children in order to communicate something about our own cultures.

Again, we would like to thank all our local partners who facilitate our project activities and who have extended their welcome to us today.
