This is one of the problems being most frequently quoted by women asking SOLWODI for help or being sent to SOLWODI. Often this problem is connected to other problems ( for example after enforced marriages or problems related to marriages ) A married woman from abroad will only obtain an individual right of residence after 3 years of marriage. Should she leave her husband , even as a result of violence or sexual abuse, before those 3 years are over, it will be very difficult to obtain such a permit of residence for her.
In addition to the above quoted problem, many women are asking SOLWODI for help, because they have problems as asylum seekers, with violent husbands or because they are pregnant. In cases where deportation is imminent, SOLWODI advisors will check , whether there are other good reasons which could stop such a deportation or legal advice will be provided. If a deportation can`t be avoided, then SOLWODI tries to provide help to those women returning to their home countries under a special returners programme.
