1.What is trafficking ?

Trafficking ( according to definitions of the UN and the European Union ) is an offence, usually related to migration.

The term " Trafficking " means, that human beings are looked at and treated like commodities or merchandise.

Traffickers exploit the social and economic plight of migrant-people – hoping for a better future in Germany – by recruiting them with the false promise of a possible job or marriage here in Germany. The entry into Germany can then happen legally or illegally. Thereafter the victims are forced in a dependency, because they owe money to the traffickers, or by threat or sheer force and being dependent, they can be exploited.

Most common in Germany, trafficked people are being sexually exploited as prostitutes. But also people working in other branches, for instance in households or in the construction branch become victims of that offence. The decisive fact is not the job itself but that migrant people are being abused by the traffickers to earn money with them. Trafficking abuses power , it exploits the plight of people and the not existing experience of the victims – it`s a modern form of slave trade.

A great number of people, who have no perspective in their home countries to feed their families and to get by with their lives, those people hope to improve their situation in another country ( for instance Germany ), where they hope to find a job.

Since the immigration rules are often very restrictive, many women for instance, try to get in their dream country through arranged marriages, thereby often becoming victims of men abusing them and forcing them also into prostitution.

Since the borders to the East-European countries have been opened, but also as a result of the globalisation, trafficking has become a lucrative, but not very risky branch of the organized crime. The commodity " Women " is being traded in a flourishing and worldwide business, which is being dominated by highly organized groups.
