2.1 Recruitment and Transport of Women

The recruitment often happens openly or under cover.

The open recruitment often happens in brothels or among prostitutes offering their services on the street. Those women know that they are expected to work as prostitutes and that they have to pay back the costs which emerged from recruitment and their transport. But the traffickers falsely tell the women that they can earn much more money abroad, that they themselves can decide how and under which conditions they will work and that they can stop working as prostitutes at any time. About the real conditions abroad, which are exploitation and often force there, they are not being informed.

When women are being recruited under cover, the recruiting agents often promise well paid and legal jobs abroad, for instance as aux pair maids, household-. or kitchen aids etc. Many women trust in those promises and consider this as a chance to improve their personal situation. These recruiting agents are often friends or belong to the family or they pretend to act as friends.

In newspaper advertisements, women are being offered jobs in Western countries as artists or dancers. Very often trafficking organizations place those advertisements in newspapers.

According to the German Federal Criminal Authorities, 220 of the 642 victims in 2005 stated, that they had not been truly informed for what they had been recruited for. 166 women had been recruited through artists`agencies or newspaper advertisements and 78 had been forced to leave their home country. 199 women had agreed to work as prostitutes . 41 % of the traffickers, who had been brought to court, were Germans, 22 % of the criminals were women.

The traffickers perform their job in a very determined way and often try to recruit women in order to satisfy a request and in accordance with the "market situation". The requests for women or orders are being handled by persons living in the home country of the women concerned. They provide necessary passports, visa, travel-. and exit permits and they also rent , if required, accommodation for the time of the trafficking. At the same time transport is being organized and costs, risks and the most suitable route and means of transport are being assessed.
