The landscape on my 13.5-kilometre medium-difficulty hike on the "Watzenhahner Riesen" GeoRoute is characterised by Westerwald basalt. On my way, I encounter countless rock formations such as the GeoTop Watzenhahner Riesen. At the Kranstein, the GeoTop of the Year 2020, between Willmenrod and Weltersburg, my tour begins through the old forests around the Watzenhahn, whose ridge rises above the Limburg Basin in the northwest. Impressive, legendary sites and basalt formations accompany me with their striking wave structures, a prime example of a fossilised seabed from the Devonian period and, for me, geology you can touch. Near the Bertenauer Kopf I discover the small crater "Wolkenstein". , together with Lake Manrother, gives me an idea of the efforts that were once made in the region to mine the volcanic rock. Non-ferrous metals (copper, lead, etc.) were mined in the three mines Wilhelminensegen, Schiefer and Bertenauerkopf along the trail.

Bad Marienberg Tour: Adventure for Advanced Cyclists

Your adventure starts in the charming Bad Marienberg. This tour is packed with highlights, so plan extra time for stops. If you ride counterclockwise, starting in Bad Marienberg, you'll quickly reach Großseifen. Here awaits a small art park along the bike path. Near Langenbach by Kirburg, you'll encounter a former mining lake. As soon as you leave the village behind, you'll relish the view of a vast plateau. On the way to Kirburg, you'll cross a stone bridge over the Nister. Approaching Bad Marienberg from the other side, consider a stop at the wildlife park or perhaps challenge yourself at the climbing forest. Between Unnau-Korb and Nistertal, make a short detour to Nisterfurt and Nistersteg. The tour concludes with an impressive view of the Erbacher Railway Bridge from the railroad path above Nistertal. This bridge, opened in 1911, was once Germany's largest concrete bridge.

The “Hohe Westerwald” is a region in Rhineland-Palatinate, more precisely in the Westerwald which is located Among the well-known places in this region are Rennerod, Bad Marienberg, Westerburg and Wiesensee.
