Exchange Program Support and Advice

The International Office’s team – together with other information centers at the university – is responsible for assisting and advising the exchange students.

To make sure that your start in Koblenz runs as smoothly as possible, we are happy to provide you with a student mentor. Your mentor is well familiar with the university and city. He or she is happy to assist you in the following:

  • Picking you up from the train station and bringing you to your address
  • Assisting you in becoming situated and with the challenges you may be facing
  • Assisting you with the formalities of enrollment, opening an account and visiting the Immigration Office and the General Register Office
  • Showing you the university and advising you on your studies and courses
  • Introducing you to other students
  • Showing you the city and answering all questions you may have

Please let your mentor know at least one week before your departure when you will be arriving in Koblenz.

  • Your first and last name
  • Your nationality
  • Your field of study at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences
  • Your level of German proficiency

Before the beginning of each semester, the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences offers an orientation week for exchange students. During this week, you will enroll at the university and, together with you mentor, fulfill all the necessary requirements, such becoming registered with the public authorities, opening a bank account, and taking out health and liability insurance. In addition, you will meet with you department coordinator to put together a class schedule and, if necessary, adjust your Learning Agreement. Besides this, the International Office will organize a German crash course for you and your mentors will show you the campus and city.

In the 2015 summer semester, the orientation week is from March 09 - 13, 2015.

Each department of study offers introductory events to inform you about the department. You highly recommend you attend the event of your department of study. Here, you will obtain a first insight of the your field of study and meet your professors, turtors and fellow students. For more information about these events, please get in touch with your contact person.

For the orientation week, the International Office organizes a German A1/A2 and B1/B2 crash course for international students. The International Office also organizes a double lesson which takes place once a week during the semester.

Each semester, the International Office offers a semester program. The semester program is filled with a number of scheduled activities for you to take part in. These include an informal meet and greet for students; seminars and workshops for further academic and personal training; one-day and several-day excursions; an International Evening; as well as other exciting events. During the semester program, you can get in contact with other German and international students to plan a gathering, celebrate a special occasion, or explore Koblenz and the surrounding area together.

If you find you are having problems understanding the material in a given course, you can sign up for a tutorial. Tutorials are being offered for groups of at least five students. Under the leadership of a senior student, this tutorial is offered to you for free and should help you in overcoming the problems you are having with the course material. For questions concerning a tutorial with at least five participants, please contact the International Office at international.

Are you looking for an internship, a part-time job, or a permanent position after your studies? If so, we can help you with the application process! Application training seminars occur on a regular basis and are designed to teach you how an application should appear after you are done filling it out, what is important when being interviewed for a position, and how to find the company that suits you best. You are also more than welcome to set up an appointment with an academic advisor by writing us an e-mail at international.

Are you an international student at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences and need assistance in writing an academic paper or bachelor’s/master’s thesis? We are here to answer any questions you may have concerning academic writing regarding, for example, citations, the format or structure. We can also assist you with German grammar and spelling. In order for us to assist you the best way possible, please contact the International Office as soon as you receive your topic at  international.

International students can apply for a scholarship in a variety of ways:

  • The DAAD Graduation Scholarship is for international Bachelor-students from 4th semester on that need at least one more year to complete their studies.
  • Next application deadline: April 2014
    Requirements: Good academic standing and the need of financial aid.

For further information, please inform yourself on all of the scholarships offered to DAAD’s international students.

The student service provider, Studierendenwerk Koblenz, offers you free initital legal consultation for any legal issue you might be having. This could include, for example, problems with your landlord, questions concerning immigration rights, or student financial aid (BAFÖG).  If you would like to receive legal advice, you first need to request a certificate of eligibility (German: Berechtigungsschein) at the Service Office on campus which is located in room A042. 

If you are having problems with your studies, or any social or personal challenges, please contact the counseling services provided by, Studierendenwerk Koblenz, your student service provider. They offer an array of counseling formats:

  • Individual counseling regarding financial, social, or personal challenges
  • Seminars regarding time management, stress management, exam anxiety and more.

The student union (AStA) also has a counselling center of which you are more than welcome to take advantage.
