Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. celebrates 40th anniversary

Germany's largest telephone counseling service for children, young people and parents is celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the association is launching an online campaign via its Facebook and Instagram social media channels during the Week of Civic Engagement from September 11-20, sharing memories, facts and figures from the past 40 years - not least to draw attention to and thank the more than 3,000 volunteer counselors for their commitment over 40 years. Because without them, no counseling would be possible!

Since the beginning of secure statistical records, thousands of trained volunteer counselors have conducted approximately 4.7 million calls with people seeking advice. The "Nummer gegen Kummer" (number against sorrow) has the largest nationwide voluntary and cross-association counseling network for adolescents and parents in Germany. Started in 1980 with the children's and young people's telephone, the advice service was expanded in 1994 to include the peer approach "Young people advise young people". In 2001, the Parents' Hotline was established as a counseling service for parents and other educators who want to talk about concerns related to (their) children. Since 2003, the offer for children and adolescents has been supplemented by em@il counseling, and in 2019, chat counseling has been added. A Fact sheet summarizes all important figures 40th anniversary vividly summarized once again.

The importance of such low-threshold, nationwide counseling services was particularly evident during the Corona pandemic: The various offers were used intensively by children and adolescents, but also by parents, so that there was a significant increase in consultations at all offers, especially in the lockdown months of March to May.

The indispensable counseling service "Nummer gegen Kummer" has been supported by Deutsche Telekom for almost 30 years, and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth has also been a long-standing and reliable partner.
