The Ingelheimer Winzerkeller forms the city’s heart in terms of both wine and culture. It is an unforgettable experience combining the traditional and the modern. Within the historic walls of the building that was once home to the Ingelheim winemakers association, you will find not only a wine bar combining the offerings of nearly 30 winemakers and one distillery, but also a cultural meeting point hosting regular top-class events, such as recitals and concerts. The unique atmosphere strikes you as soon as you walk in, with a blend of old walls and modern architecture that really makes the heritage of wine production something almost tangible. There is a good reason why Ingelheim has developed a name as a centre for red wine, and, as a committed white wine lover, you are surprised to find a new favourite tipple at the wine tasting! Every mouthful reveals the richness of knowledge and passion the local winemakers put into their production. As you savour all the flavours around your tongue, you think back on the exciting day behind you:

It was still pleasantly cool when you and your companion set out in the morning for the Historic Tour of Ober-Ingelheim. The many little corners of the red wine town are as multifaceted in character as the wines produced here. There are opulent noble estates, varied city gates, the ‘Engelthal’ Cistercian nunnery and the unique Ingelheim mountain church. Formerly St. Wigbert, it is part of the best preserved fortified church in the south and west of Germany. Inside the impressive building, you were able to admire the Romanesque church tower with its late Gothic battlement and to observe many elements of pre-Reformation chancel fittings and the artistic stained glass of the Middle Rhine from around 1400.All these styles from different eras have been harmoniously blended like the flavours in the fine wine, another tasting glass of which is currently being poured for you.

Today has already given you a strong impression of the city's deeply entrenched cultural roots, and you already have a good idea of what tomorrow might bring: at the Tourist Information Centre right next to the wine bar, you noticed Ingelheim Imperial Palace and the nearby museum. The palace, once owned by Charles the Great, and the multimedia options to find out more about it, from the KAISERPFALZ app to the virtual 360° tour, sound like the perfect addition to what you have experienced so far, a blend of historic heritage and lively modernity, of culture and culinary treats. Talking of treats, your stomach is rumbling, reminding you that you still have dinner to enjoy in the Winzerkeller restaurant. You have not yet decided which of the regional specialities you are going to try, but you are sure of one thing, there will be a perfect wine to go with it.
