32 tentative steps among the stone giants of the Eifel

You are probably not the only one to feel ridiculously small among the striking rock formations of the Teufelsschlucht, literally the ‘Devil’s Gorge’, not far from Ernzen in the Eifel. You crane your neck to gaze up in awe at the ancient stone colossus, its sharp contours confident and powerful against the thin strip of sky that struggles to cast its light into the depths of the gorge below. You can almost hear the rocks whispering menacingly: “We’ve been standing here for thousands of years and will still be here thousands of years after you.”

With the two kids in tow, the four of you climb carefully over the slightly slippery rocks scattered across the narrow path through the gorge. The dampness lingers in the eternal shadows, adding to the cool, fresh scents of the woodland surrounding the whole route. Just a few metres away, you can see the sunlight twinkling through the canopy of leaves as the gorge opens up. You make your way to the Visitor Centre, which will be followed by the Dinosaur Park the children have been looking forward to since this morning, their eyes sparkling with excitement.

The life-size model of a diplodocus is impressive even for the grown-ups, but no doubt the huge dinosaur comes alive in the children’s unfettered imagination. A few metres further, you come across some grisly looking flying lizards. Overall, the accessible route boasts another 170 dinosaurs from 620 million years of the Earth’s history. You wonder briefly whether your little ones will sleep well tonight. Maybe they will dream of swooping pterodactyls, massive footprints on the forest floor or the awe-inspiring Teufelsschlucht.

After two pretty exciting hours with the giant lizards, you all have a giant appetite and head to the fabulously styled DINO’S DINER for sustenance. There is something for everyone here, and you all enjoy your burgers and chips with a satisfied smile. It has been a devilishly exciting day that you will all remember for a long time.
